Earning free Christmas Gifts....

Okay, I am sure you are rolling your eyes! But, Christmas is 4 months away AND I know you all realize how expensive Christmas can be! So, what do we do to cut down on Christmas spending? We start NOW and hopefully have a big dent in the planning by Halloween. Yeap, you heard right, I try to have most of the shopping down now, and finish up with the hard to find gifts on the day after Thanksgiving. So, what do I do to make this happen?

First of all, I am involved with several point programs. MyPoints, Swagbucks, Coke Points, Thank you Points and many survey companies. By doing these I get points which I can cash in for gift cards. Swagbucks racks up points quickly and you can earn Amazon.com gift cards, which I inturn use for christmas shopping. ( if you are interested in MyPoints, or the Survey companies, email me and I will send you the links). Typically in one year I can save enough points on Swagbucks to get $75.00 in Amazon.com cards and use it for gifts.

Second, I do the Nielsen Scanning program. This program takes FOREVER to earn anything, but I typically try to get one prize in the catalog that I can use for a gift.

Third, For the teachers. Now is the time to get those free and cheap school supplies! Save them for a Christmas Gift for your kids teachers. Every year I make a basket full of supplies for the teachers! Since they get so many "apple" items that they don't keep, this gives them something they can use in the classroom and help them save money along the way. I always make sure the basket has pencils, pens, glue sticks, crayons ( for younger grades), and klennex.

Forth, for friends and neighbors. If you have neighbors/ friends that you know would enjoy a night out. Give them a christmas card with a free night of babysitting. Then, when you have the their kids, make it a fun night with popcorn and a movie. ( $1.00 Redbox and cheap microwave popcorn!)

Fifth, Shop online and earn Ebates money back. IF you have to spend money on something, shop online and find the best price, then go to Ebates! Ebates pays you a percentage back on what you spend. ALSO, if you ALWAYS pay off your credit card monthly, get a rewards card to earn points or money back on that and get another gift card that way. Remember this only works if you pay your card off! Why get a $25.00 gift card from the points when you spent over $100 on interest!!! NOT a good deal!

There are many ways to cut back on your spending for Christmas. Start looking at clearance and sale items NOW. Make a list to see who you really need to buy for!! My family has gotten so big that most of us just bring a dish to pass to the family party and only give gifts to the children in the family. In July, Target had a big toy clearance, so I bought so things at that for my children. And I hit a great clearance at a Dollar General, so that is also put away for the kids. If you start thinking about the deals now, plan and get ready, Christmas will not break the bank!

I will possibly be able to add a 4th week and get to the end of September. I am going to trade my mom 12 ears of corn for some tomatoes I picked, So that will be another meal. And I am making 15 pints of salsa this afternooon, which I could then share!

Here is my Menu Plan for the next 3 weeks.( 3 weeks multipled by 7 days is 21 meals, except for lunches and some breakfasts my kids get through school), Not completed, due to my run to Aldi's Tomorrow.

Breakfasts:

Then I freeze them and heat them up in the microwave for a quick breakfast. Also, that allows me to only have to cook waffles one big batch at a time vs several days in a month.

Lunches:
( Kids have school 5 days a week, so we will need only weekend lunches for them) ( for my job, I pack a lunch, typically the yogarts, some crackers or cereal and a piece of fruit)
Hot Dogs, 2 days
Mac and Cheese, 2 days

Planning for shopping

Well, on July 31, I made my menu for 3 weeks. We made it 4 weeks and now things are getting low again. I am organizing coupons and getting ready for some shopping. Today, I will run over to Sentry. They double coupons up to .50 cents and I have a $10 birthday coupon I want to use. Tomorrow Pick N Save has double to $1.00 up to 5 coupons. So I will go there. Then I will finish with Aldi's. I need to make it for another 3 weeks and keep the bill under $200. Which gives me $14.00 a day to feed my family. I have to have 3 weeks worth of dinners, some lunches and some breakfasts. I say some because my kids get school lunch and breakfast.

I will post to you how I do. :)

Well, we are back to having a car payment! UGH!

Although both of our cars are paid off, my husband's dream of owning a vintage VW Beetle has been lingering for some time now. Well, He found one. Great price. Great condition. We are picking it up tomorrow. It will give us a car payment for 4 years at $125.00 a month. My plan is to pay it off this school year! I don't want more debt hanging over our heads. I try to be as frugal as possible, but this was something my husband has wanted for a long time!
So, I had to change my header. It no longer states debt free except for a mortgage. Now, it's debt free except for a house and one car payment. :)

The good news is that ALOT of jobs have been popping up. So, I have some small cash income for the next few weeks!

Also, I am planning a BIG shopping trip for next week. We will see how that goes!

Cheap vs. Frugal, random notes

I have been frugal all of my adult life, but I don't consider myself cheap. Recently, I had someone tell me I was cheap. So, I am going to write what I feel is the difference and have you give me your feedback!

Frugal is using using a coupon when you go out to eat!
Cheap is not giving the waitress/ waiter a tip!
Frugal is buying Tomatoes seeds and planting them for a garden.
Cheap is going to your neighbors garden and helping yourself.
Frugal is when a freebie is available and the sign says,"take one" you take one.
Cheap is when the candy bowl at the bank says take one and you DUMP the WHOLE THING in your purse ( yes I have seen this with my own eyes!)
Frugal is using hand me down clothes for the kids
Cheap is buying the kids fancy, name brand clothes and not taking off the price tag, wearing the clothes for family photos, then returning the clothes ( yes, I witnessed this too!)
Frugal is sometimes paying full price for something when you know if you bought the cheaper version, it would ware out and not be worth what you already put into it.
Cheap is not buying it, "borrowing" it from a friend and NEVER giving it back!

I could go on and on. The point is that being frugal is having what you already have and being thankful!  Cheap is being greedy or selfish. Cheap is doing things so that your money and your fist never seperate. A frugal lifestyle can be a blessing. A cheap lifestyle can turn you into a very mean scrooge!

I have always felt blest! God has always provided! We save where we can. We reuse things if we can. We use rummage sale and hand me downs. But, I would never do some things I see people do every day.

How do you feel? Are you frugal? Do you consider frugal the same as cheap? Understand when this person called me cheap, She meant it in the worse possible way.  She was not being polite. :)

Back to School....ALREADY???

Our local news had a Back to School segment where the woman said she would spend around $200 on her kids for back to school shopping. I was shocked! She had 4 school age kids, so that is $50 a kid!!

Are you getting your kids ready for back to school? I am done with our back to school shopping except for buying head phones, which I will pick up at the Dollar Store, because they just need them for computer time so I am not going to get expensive ones for them to damage. How much to you spend per child? What do you do to save money? Do you reuse supplies from year to year?

Here is an example of my kids list and what we did to save money. Maybe it can help some of you out or give you ideas! Also, feel free to share with me your ideas! I would love to hear them!

My daughter's list:
2 spiral notebooks....19 cents each after Menards Rebate
6 Folders with 2 pockets each...picked up last year after the school clearance for .15 cents each
12 New #2 Pencils...picked up free
2 red pens, 2 blue pens...got free from Target/Bic Deal
1 pkg of loose leaf paper....39 cents after Menards Rebate
1 Eraser...picked up a 5 pack of erasers at Menards for .39 cents after rebate, will split the package between the two kids
1 box of Colored pencils.....39 cents after Menards Rebate
1 box of Facial Tissue...69 cents at Aldis
1 Highlighter.....39 cents after Menards Rebate
1 Scissors...39 cents after Menards Rebate
1 Ruler, metric and inch....39 cents after Menards Rebate
1 Large Glue Stick...had some left over from last year. Still would like to find a deal on these and stock pile them. :)
1 box of Markers....39 cents after Menards Rebate
4 Black Dry Erase Markers and a Dry Erase Eraser ( Haven't gotten that yet!)
1 set of headphones ( haven't gotten yet. will buy at the dollar store)
1 3 ring binder for Art Class....$1.99 after coupons at Target
1 pair of gym tennies, $3.00 on clearance at Walmart this summer

Daughters: $9.69 plus tax, not including the Dry Eraser stuff which I still have to find and the headphones which I still haven't bought. Granted, I have to wait to get my money back on the rebates, but Menards is great about rebates!

My son's list:
2 composition notebooks -wide rules, had one in stockpile, need to buy one more
1 pair of pointed scissors, had them left over from last year. Gave them a good cleaning.
1 box of washable markers.....39 cents after Menards rebate
1 ruler, metric and inch.... .39 cents after Menards Rebate.
1 box of crayons... Free at Walgreens after RR's
24 new sharpened pencils...Free
5 pencil top erasers...picked up last year for .20 cents a 15 count package, kept in stockpile
1 8 oz bottle of glue.... .19 cents after rebate
4 large glue sticks...left over from last year, kept in stockpile
1 small supply box...left over from last year, gave it a good cleaning
1 pair of gym shoes...bought at Walmart on clearance for $3.00
1 box of facial tissues...69 cents at Aldis
1 box colored pencils...39 cents from Menards Rebate
1 set of headphones for the computer, need to pick up at the dollar store
1 three ring binder for Art Class....$1.99 at Target with coupons

Sons: $7.24 and tax, not including the composition book I need to pick up and the headphones.

So, even if I spend another $15.00 on those few things ( just for example), I would spend $31.93 for 2 kids. In my stockpile, I have been stocking pens, notebooks, loose leaf paper, markers, scissors, sticky notes, calculators, compasses, protractors, pencils sharpeners, erasers, etc for the rest of the school year and for starting a stockpile for next year. I have one Rubbermaid bin with school supplies. So, I have no plans on buying supplies throughout the school year. OH Also, backpacks!! Menards had the cheap ones for .99 cents after rebate. I didn't buy any this year but I have 4 stockpiled from last year, so my kids are still using their backpacks from last year, but should we have a zipper break or fabric rip, I can replace it with a cheap backpack in my stockpile.

Again, post your ideas in the comment sections!

Great Trip to Walgreens!

Walgreens was doing some major clearnace!! If you have a Walgreens near by, you may want to stop and check it out! They had baby food for .25 and .50 cents each for Jars and 2packs of fruit! They had clearance on socks, nylons and tights for .10 cents each. They had clearance on summer items like kids plates, flip flops and swimming toys!

I had to go get a ink cartridge refilled. So, here was my 2 transactions.
Transaction one:
Ink Refill $9.99
Xcel Laundry detergent, 2 bottles, on sale with coupon, $1.99 each
5 pairs of Trouser socks, .80 cents each on clearance
2 3pks of Crew Socks, $1.39 on clearance
2 boxes of Tampons, 2/$8.00, had a $2.50 coupon off, and got a $3.00 RR back
2 Plastic table ware plates, on clearance for .50 cents. They will be added to a special christmas gift to a friend who collects the logo that was on the plates.
1 box of crayons, $1.00 on sale, got a $1.00 RR back
Total: $29.94  The reciept said I saved $32.82 because of the full cost of the socks, but I would have never spent that much on them at full price. :)

Second Transaction:
42 pairs of Nylons!! I need them for work and they were on clearance for .10 cents a pair!!
Then I used my $4.00 in RR's from the previous transaction to pay for them all. So, out of pocket for this transaction was .43 cents!! It states on the reciept that I saved over $146.31! That is due to the full price of the products, but I wouldn't have paid full price. I am now STOCKPILED for nylons, tights and socks for work!! YEAH!!!
